Codes and flexibility
Gaining access to several social circles, individuals often start collating personal vocabularies that include some codes of conduct. Like anything else, there are pros and cons to be considered when this happens.
The stored information can be useful in moments of reflection about the inner workings of human behaviour. It can also become a straitjacket that restricts the person from seeing the world from other perspectives.
Time marches on and the individual either remains consciously aware of changing dynamics, or he gets left behind in his adherence to outmoded values.
The past is gone. It is useful as a reference point for making sense of the present, but that’s about it.
Constant forward motion and attentiveness are probably more productive than investing time and energy in pining for things that could have happened, but didn’t.
