Visions of appropriate things to do, or paths to follow, are usually directly linked to the experiences and knowledge of the person doing the visualising.

Needless to say, each generation comes into the world to discover new developments and inventions that become part of their world views as a collective. Those of more advanced years are not always the quickest to identify the potential of a given moment.

In some cultures, a particular generation may have blessed with the gift of being in the right place at the right time. Their forbears might not have known enough about the fast moving world, leaving the fortunate ones with opportunities to make things up as they went along.

To be more specific, some people in the aforementioned category were not generous or foresighted in negotiating with their offspring about making personal choices and autonomy.

After investing considerable amounts of energy in placing obstacles in the way of their offspring, eventually they come to terms with the fact that there is only so much anyone can do to impose his or her will on a fellow human being.
