Imagination is funny

I decided to attend a graduation show at one of London’s leading art colleges recently. I only went out of curiosity, hoping I might see something created by a talented student or two that could stimulate my imagination into bringing forth some new ideas. The college is in a part of London that I used to frequently visit quite a while ago. Nowadays, I feel like a stranger in that neighbourhood, so I arrived at the venue later than I had hoped to.

Inside the college, I walked straight into a prize giving ceremony for graduating students. It was nice to learn about the sort of awards the new graduates were receiving, such as free studio time and space in suitable settings, but a lot of the group dynamics went over my head, since I’m a song and dance man at heart.

Looking at the exhibits, I noticed that some of the most striking work on display had been created by some of the young people who I saw receiving awards before, so I felt like I could see what the tutors and awards panellists could see regarding the potential of the emerging artists. I can’t say that I saw anything that made me stop in my tracks, however.

On my way out of the college building, I heard someone calling my name. It turned out to be an associate who I only ever encounter on social media platforms, even though we’ve known each other for years. We spent a short while shooting the breeze and catching up on each other’s news.

Only a week later, the same associate called me to ask if I would be willing to sing in a cross art form event that would feature another Black classical singer. I said I would be willing to find out more and a few days later, I was drafted into singing in another classical concert at Longfield Hall (near Loughborough Junction in Brixton), with a group of Black classical singers and musicians. It’s funny the way that one path leads so neatly into another. Our concert – In Other Words is happening on Friday, 27th of July from 7 – 10.30pm at Longfield Hall, 50 Knatchbull Road, London SE5 9QY.
