Actions speak louder than words. I have heard stories cutting across boundaries of race, age, gender, faith, region and other yardsticks that confirm this to be true.
Many of us talk of our aims to be our brother or sister’s keeper. In practice, we have widely diverging notions of what the ‘duty of care’ actually entails.
In some cases, we might be lucky enough to be included in social systems where the well being of individuals and communities is taken into consideration in exemplary ways. Privileges of this sort shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Some folks are genuinely altruistic. Their efforts should be widely upheld as beacons of high ideals, so they can inspire others.
On the other hand, maybe it isn’t too morbid to believe that most people are mainly interested in their own progress and survival.
