Music online in real time

One of the major challenges for musicians and singers in the current atmosphere is the difficulty we experience when we try to perform music in real time from separate locations, to be presented on video conferencing tools.

The well coordinated ‘performances’ that have been circulated on social media and other networks are usually created through individuals recording themselves in alignment with a track that gives a sense of bearings. All the recordings are sent to a centralised sound engineer who brings them all together.

Today, I’m going to be involved in something different. I shall be performing on Zoom with Lyrical Voices – a choir that I lead for Ealing Libraries. We are inviting audiences to listen to us as we perform songs together in real time.

Anyone who joins us will hear performances affected by latency. In other words, there will be delayed reception from location to location and the music will sound different to anything that is usually presented in public.

Most of the choir members are used to the unusual sounds that we currently make, as we’ve been meeting regularly on Zoom since the early days of the lockdown. We invite all interested listeners to be with us in our last get together before the summer break. Hopefully you will enjoy spending time with us, in the spirit of togetherness. Please see the Zoom Meeting details below.
