People are people

Feeling nostalgic for less complex times? It used to be easy to generalise about people based on attributes they shared in common. Nowadays, there are so many more details to consider when one deals with individuals, or even groups.

Organisations would present impressive equal opportunities statements on their printed materials and often on public display in places of work. Commitment to upholding principles related to Diversity was expressed by many.

All those policy statements and training courses have been absorbed into the psyches of cosmopolitan city dwellers. Codes of conduct and social mores in these spaces are very different to what they used to be.

Those who used to pay lip service to the idea of equal opportunities are now under a lot more scrutiny than ever before. Insincerity and hypocrisy are often detected at inconvenient moments.

Where is this all leading to? Who is under the most pressure to adjust?
