Sentimental attachment to maps

Maps and territories are related to each other, but they are not exactly the same.

Once upon a time, some of us used to rely on A –Z books to find unfamiliar locations. Such publications are now probably obsolete, since there are technological advancements such as satnavs for drivers, and other features on our smart phones that can be used for the same purpose.

Having said this, there are times when our phone or search engine directions take us on the scenic route to our destinations. There is nothing better than real knowledge of the terrain.

Perhaps this way of looking at things is also relevant to documents, books and other publications that some of us keep for future reference.

It is easy to forget that most of what we need to find is easily accessible through search engines nowadays. How does one know what is worth keeping from the old fashioned ways of storing information?
