Sing a little song
In my research, preparing to perform a well known song cycle in a concert, I listened to a recording of master class given by an acknowledged expert on the vocal repertoire of particular time and location.
The expert spoke briefly about the history of the song cycle in question, saying it had been commissioned by a film director, to be sung by an internationally renowned singer, to be included in the soundtrack of a film.
Apparently due to one misunderstanding or another, the film maker withdrew the commission from the composer (who was also globally established), and gave it to someone else.
The film was made and the singer sang the second song cycle (it is hardly known by anyone today), while the spurned composer completed his piece, which is now regarded as a major work in the repertoire.
Exceptional creative energy and talent should be treated with respect as much as possible.
