Still dressing up

On one of my early visits to New York, I was keen to see the garment district, visit Bloomingdales and see what the city had to offer me as a cynical Londoner. I was out and about with a group of men of my heritage who were older than me. They all seemed to think it was due to youthful exuberance that I was interested in clothes and dressing up. Now that I’m in the age group that they were in at the time, I am still interested in clothes. What lies behind the difference of opinion here?

I think those older guys thought I was into dressing up to impress other folks. When I look in the mirror in the morning, I’m not thinking about what other people might see. I truly derive pleasure from exploring possibilities in what I wear. Obviously, this trait is not regarded as that of an alpha male, but who cares, really?

When I met up with Farouque Abdela in Zanzibar, it took a while before we had a chance to simply sit down and think about clothes and that sort of thing. Farouque used to dress me many years ago – I wore only clothes made by him for a long while. He said he had a present for me. Was I going to like it? If I didn’t, then…..!

The present arrived – a long waist coat in beautiful fabric. Of course I liked it. I tried it on immediately and had some photos taken. It was almost like old times, except that we didn’t have smart phones and Instagram in those days.

Now that I’m back in London, I’m looking forward to wearing this garment in a conspicuous place, on a special occasion. It will be for my own personal pleasure, of course.
