Use it or lose it

Continuing the riff about conditioning, what happens when a person who previously felt in thrall to a system or way of working suddenly realises that he or she has got nothing to lose?

Then that person can step forward and be counted. He or she can shoot from the hip, possibly bringing forth ideas that wouldn’t have been shared under other circumstances.

It can feel awkward, being a fish out of water. On the other hand we don’t have to simply accept the status quo. When things get shaken up, everyone has an opportunity to evaluate the usefulness of what they’re doing.

There will be those who prefer the cosiness of sedation. If this wasn’t the case, why would a term such as “Stockholm Syndrome” exist?

Freedom is as much to do with psychology as it is with physicality.
