Walking up those stairs
Looking for a quiet space, I walked up flights of stairs in a public building with a close friend.
Arriving a particular level, my friend opened the door to a room or corridor and was about to step forward into the darkness. I felt very strongly that he shouldn’t go inside, so I called his name.
My friend stopped and listened to me. We turned back and went down the stairs.
Shortly after that time, the premiere screening of a film was presented in the same venue. The event was marred with tragedy however, because a member of the public went up the same steps, entered a dark room and ended up breaking his neck through plunging down into the auditorium.
Memories of the experience with my friend sometimes come back to me. What if I hadn’t trusted my instincts, or if he hadn’t listened to what I said?
